Regeneration and Growth following Silvicultural Treatments in a Productive Central Hardwood Forest
نویسندگان
چکیده
The lack of desirable oak (Quercus spp.) regeneration on upland sites is a problem in the Central Hardwood Region. While reintroduction fire, thinning, and/or harvesting has been proposed as solution to increase regeneration, these treatments may have limited impact productive sites, and effects growth residual midstory stems not clear. This study examined response white alba) mature, oak-dominated, forest following four treatments: (1) burn, (2) thin (3) harvest (4) no treatment (control) at Trail Tears State Forest located southern Illinois. Results indicated there was significant difference density among for any size class. In addition, none resulted radial release stems. These results suggested need be modified that enough time since application, or intense enough,

Uneven-aged management (UEAM) is becoming increasingly popular in the southeastern United States. HoweLter. effects of UEAM on wildlije habitat have not been adequately documented. متن کاملSilvicultural systems for southern bottomland hardwood forests
Silvicultural systems integrate both regeneration and intermediate operations in an orderly process for managing forest stands. The clearcutting method of regeneration favors the development of species that are moderately intolerant to intolerant of shade. In fact, clearcutting is the most proven and widely used method of successfully regenerating bottomland oak species in the South. The seed-t...
متن کاملEffects of Harvesting Treatments on the Ant Community in a Mississippi River Bottomland Hardwood Forest in West-central Mississippi
We assessed effects that harvesting treatments had on the ant community in a Mississippi River bottomland hardwood forest in west-central MS. Ants were collected on Pittman Island using pitfall traps from July to November in 1996, 1997, and 2000. The forest received three replicated harvesting treatments in 1995, including: 1) uncut controls (check), 2) selection treatments removing 50 percent ...
متن کاملA Forest Tent Caterpillar Outbreak Increased Resource Levels and Seedling Growth in a Northern Hardwood Forest
In closed-canopy forests, gap formation and closure are thought to be major drivers of forest dynamics. Crown defoliation by insects, however, may also influence understory resource levels and thus forest dynamics. We evaluate the effect of a forest tent caterpillar outbreak on understory light availability, soil nutrient levels and tree seedling height growth in six sites with contrasting leve...
